Butterfly Lupus Pictures

Butterfly lupus is one of the most common lupus forms out there. This type of the well known autoimmune disease is responsible for more than 40% of all the lupus diagnosis in the world. Butterfly lupus is easily characterized by a butterfly - shaped rash, but that does not mean that everyone who presents with a rash in the shape of a butterfly has lupus. This can simply indicate a very peculiar skin condition that has nothing to do with an autoimmune disease and everything to do with some environmental factors that few people can alter. Thus, butterfly lupus pictures are important diagnosis tools when trying to separate the two types of skin conditions: the ones generated by lupus and the ones caused by a curable illness.

In some cases, if the butterfly lupus is not yet creating the classic image of an infected person, the rash can be easily mistaken with something caused by excessive exposure to sunlight, maybe sunburn. However, once the treatment for sunburn or even a type of allergy does not have the desired effect, it is time to consider other possibilities. The butterfly lupus rash has a malar distribution. This basically means that it appears on the face, especially on the nose and the cheeks, essentially covering the cheekbones. Unfortunately, in some severe cases, the butterfly lupus rash can extend to the entire body, affecting sensitive areas like the interior of the thighs, the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. Also, these lesions can emerge beneath the breasts, if they are large enough.

However, to the experienced eye of a dermatologist or even a nurse, it is easy to spot the difference between butterfly lupus skin problems and sunburn, even without the help of butterfly lupus pictures. Why? Well, because the lupus lesions, while not in a particular shape, are strictly demarcated, of a certain color and consistency. Usually, the lupus damaged skin is thicker than the one surrounding it.

Butterfly lupus causes

There are several things that can cause butterfly lupus or any kind of lupus, for that matter. First off, the butterfly rash can be a symptom of systemic lupus erythematosus, which is, as the name implies, a full body autoimmune disease. While butterfly lupus is annoying, it is certainly not a serious condition in its early stages. Also, one should not be worried about this type of lupus if it shows up all alone. However, if it is a symptom of SLE, then things get complicated.

One of the reasons why autoimmune diseases are so scary is because they cannot be predicted. Another reason would be because they cannot be cured. Their symptoms, like the butterfly rash, for example, can be alleviated, but they will never disappear completely. Unfortunately, even if they do disappear, the skin that was affected will never look the same again. Scarring is a certainty when talking about lupus skin problems.

A very peculiar thing about lupus is that it can be triggered by some medication. If the patient has a history of autoimmune diseases in the family, even if it is not lupus, and is given hydralazine or procainamide for other illnesses, then the result might be a bit different than the one expected. If, indeed, the medication is the cause, taking the patient off said drugs should stop the process of the disease for a while. However, once lupus has been triggered, nothing can put a permanent stop in its evolution.

A very effective way of clearing out some of the lesions caused by butterfly lupus is to keep the affected areas away from the sun. While that might sound easy to do, the reality is very different from whatever you might picture in your head. Try thinking about going out only after the sun has completely set, living a nocturnal lifestyle and basically becoming light phobic. That might not work all that well for everyone. Therefore, a good sunscreen cream and some scarves, gloves and shades should do the trick for a short while. However, it is best to just avoid as much direct exposure to sunlight as possible.
